Photo Frenzy: 8 Online Image Editors

Websites3 Comments »

Web-designers and photo-savvy teens alike, everybody needs to edit a picture once in a while. Photoshop is great, but expensive and relatively hard to use. Alternatives like Gimp can solve the first problem, but sometimes we’re just too lazy to learn stuff. That’s why you turn to the interweb. Here are some great (and not-so-great) online image editing apps. I stumbled upon most of them using the MakeUseOf.com Directory, neat tool for anybody who’s curious.

Ranked in order of [estimated] deliciousness.

1. Picnik

Amazing!

2. Mashface Beta

Littered with face parts, Mashface gives a strong first impression. The home page has an introduction video featuring so-called mashes of Barack Obama and John McCain, along with some other guy I don’t know, maybe Tom Cruise. The site’s purpose, to literally mash different faces together, is quite clever, and the interface is well-suited for it.

3. PhotoFunia

This one lets you add you or one of your pictures to many different settings, from Time Square to Angelina Jolie’s shirt. Some of the options use face detecting technology, allowing you to turn yourself into a lot of things, like Santa Claus, a Jedi, or Mona Lisa.

4. DrPic

Equipped with the basic weapons of edit, DrPic is a relatively basic editor.

5. Picture2Life

Like DrPic, it has all the basics, and a little bit more.

6. PICFONT

Lets you add text to images. Helpful, but not so special.

7. FACEinHOLE

Very similar to PhotoFunia. It lets you add your own face to different pictures. Its not as advanced as PhotoFunia, though.

8. TEXT-IMAGE

Very simple design with a simple purpose.

When You Ask An Eight Year Old No.4

When You Ask An Eight Year OldNo Comments »

What happens when you ask an eight-year-old…

How would you describe an epic fantasy battle?

They might answer:

So there was a guy, named Joe. Joe loved to eat fish. So one day, Joe decided to take a walk. And, well, Joe saw a man.. who looked about 85. The man said, “HOW DARE YOU LIKE FISH!” [Eight year old stops, says 'I just really don't wanna do this right now. Let's finish it later]

I apologize for the lateness and mediocreness of this article… unwilling eight-year-olds are hard to argue with.

These answers came from genuine eight-year olds and do not reflect my views or opinion.. or do they?

MakeUseOf - Cool Websites, Software and Internet Tricks

Posted Item, WebsitesNo Comments »

Technology site MakeUseOf.com can be described as many things, but most importantly its an outlet for “geeky fun” (cool sites, hacks, tips, etc.). Editor In Chief, Aibek Esengulov, wrote an article about the birth of MakeUseOf.com. Here it is:

“Well, basically I got the idea while I was doing my first year of masters in Denmark. After hardcore bachelors in computational science doing masters program in business was like a chill out. Easy lectures and lots of free time. Back then I used to share an apartment with 2 of my friends, none of whom had much interest in web. When it comes to me, for the last 5-6 years most of my daily life was centered around it. On top of that web was booming, so called web2.0 era’s first celebrities (Digg, Flickr, Delicious, etc.) were just starting to accumulate all the Buzz.

It was exciting moments. I would frequently start a sentence with something like; ‘Today I found out about new service that …’ and my girlfriend would be like; ‘Ok! it’s started…’ . I had lots of energy but nowhere I could apply it on. Then around march 2006, I heard about Amazon’s new bestseller ‘Naked Conversations’, everyone was talking about it, so I read it as well. Once I was done with it, I was determined to start a blog and maybe after a month or two I went ahead and registered makeuseof.com. And somewhere around July, I talked to Kaly (see below) and asked him if he would be interested to join me. As always, he was up for it. That’s mainly it.

As about makeuseof.com, it’s very different from most of the other tech blogs/websites. It’s unique and original in what it reviewes and how it does it. On makeuseof we don’t write about any new web applications that comes around but only about ones that are COOL, FREE and USEFUL. It may be a subjective judgement but that’s how it is. We also try to keep it simple and all accessible, so that even newbies who never used such sites like Digg and Delicious or ones who think AJAX is famous washing powder brand can easily find their way around.

Period”
