Edna & Edga
Feb 23, 2009My family went out to dinner last night with my zaid (grandpa), grandma, and uncle. We went to L. Woods. The high point of the night was when they played Edgar Winter in the men’s room. Yes.

On the way home, Sammy and I sang Layla by Derek & The Dominoes, hence my Facebook status: “You know you have awesome kids when they sing Layla by Eric Clapton in the backseat.” My parents agree. ;)
It’s been awhile since my last post. I’ve had a ton of school work (science fair, huge essays), sleepovers, and one massive task: My Bar Mitzvah training. So far, I’m on the sixth aliyah. My grandpa is doing #5, so that knocks one off for me. Whew. For the first time, though, I can see my Bar Mitzvah coming together. I can’t wait!
Anyway, kind of a lot of stuff happened. For one, it snowed. Also, my class started an art project to be auctioned off at school. But possibly the most significant event: We saw Coraline.
Coraline is definitely a new modern classic (did it win any Oscars?). My dad describe it as “about as freaky as a kids’ movie can get.” He must be right, because now I’m afraid a demonic skeleton-women is going to pop up and sew buttons into my eyes. The whole movie centers around this idea of “Be careful what you wish for,” though I interpret it a little bit differently. I think it’s saying to be happy with what you have. If you spend all of your time wishing for something better, you can’t enjoy what’s right in front of you. Don’t get me wrong: You can hope. But there’s a difference between hoping and wishing. Hoping – I think – is more proactive, whereas people wish for things and expect them to poof! magically happen. Despite reminding me of “fever dreams” and panic attacks, Coraline was an amazing movie.
K, now using panic attacks to segue into horrible Indian food experience.
Last Friday, my class went on our weekly Flex Friday trip to Indian Town. It took nearly an hour getting there, and us being naïve junior students didn’t help much. We finally arrived on Devon and rushed to find a restaurant. Our teacher took us to this storefront vegetarian fast food place. At first, it looked good. My friend Amir is Indian, so he pretty much told everybody what’s good and bad. I ended up getting something called (I think) “doce,” which is pretty much a… pretty much a… thing that you dip in weird sauce. I’m sorry, Amir, but it was potentially vomit-inducing. We got back to school almost an hour late.
Last last Saturday, Sammy and I spent the day/night with our friends, Ellen and Greg, for an awesome sleepover. As we were eating at Ed Debevic’s, we were wondering if it’s a chain restaurant. We thought it was too cool to be not-unique, but we asked ChaCha just in case. I called in, asked the question, and it came back with this: According to HowManyOfMe.com, there is only one person named Edna Bevic living in the United States. Oops. When we got back to their place, we went to the empty gym to have a Nerf fight.
As for tunes, lately I’ve been listening to Liam Finn, Fleet Foxes, and Cat Power. How’s THAT for hipster? Enjoy playlist below.
UPDATE 2.24 7:40 – Added smiley to “My parents agree” as to not sound snobby.

Coraline was AWESOME, for once Dakota Fanning’s voice didn’t make me plug my ears. Am I the only one that forgot the 3-D part was just an illusion and kept trying to reach for the little dogs?
Coraline came out too late to be part of the recent Oscars but I hope it gets a nomination next year. I loved the mix of adult themes and kids themes, it was a little Alice in Wonderland too. Agree about the difference between hoping and wishing.
Not so fast there about the hipster thing, I’m listening to a playlist of Mika, Radiohead and Bjork right now. Hey now!
Have you been to hipsterhunter.com? It is love. Great way to procrastinate and find irony and pretension in everyone you know.
I’m dying to see Coraline—maybe Leah and I will go on Friday. As for demonic sketelon-women popping up and sewing buttons in your eyes, have you seen your mother after all her Lifetime workouts?
I wanna go to L. Woods, you’re so lucky. We just ate at El Cholo. Did you hear that at least one of your new first cousins is a BOY? The other one is of indeterminate gender. Let’s hope that gets resolved soon…
Hey When is your Bar Mitzvah? I think it must be somewhere around mine which is April 18.
I love reading your posts and hearing the voice of a cool almost 13 year old.
You reference things an almost 50 year old (that would be me) would. I enjoy that you reference The Edgar Winter Group and Liam Finn in one posting, very cool. I found you through your Uncle Danny’s site (which is my favorite blog) and found him from from toodle-ing around your father’s info. What a family.
I absolutely loved Coraline, and have seen it twice. I actually had a dream about the other mother trying to sew buttons into my eyes. *Covers eyes*
Now my friend and I tilt our head sideways at random times because of that movie. :)
Have you ever heard of M. Ward? I think that you might like him… my favorite album of his is called Post War.
I wonder, wise 13-year old: would Coraline fly with an almost 6-year old (whose 8-year old sister wants to see it) or will I scar her for life (in a bad way) by taking her?
Mmmm… I’m not sure. It is pretty freaky, but I think a six year old could probably brave it :)
we’ll give it a try next weekend.
Thanks for your work on this blog – I enjoy it. I bought the Charles Wright Express Yourself album – a new issue with a bunch of extras (“Loveland” is the best of the extras, I think), and absolutely love it – it lifts my spirits greatly and gets our whole family dancing. I don’t think I would have discovered Charles Wright & Co. without your post!
Thanks! I’m glad you like Charles Wright. He IS awesome!
