Protect Protect
Jan 15, 2009I’ve written before about Flex Friday. Its basically a field trip, but we, the kids, get to lead our group. We usually take public transportation and go to things like museums and theaters. Last week, we went to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Protect Protect, the main exhibit, was amazing! Jenny Holzer made it by using a series of scrolling LED’s signs. Each one of them has a different set of writing that goes across it. One (my favorite) is only one-line summaries of different books she’s read. Another is just her personal writing (I didn’t really like that one). The room they’re in is dark and reminds me of something at the Science and Industry Museum.
Another part of the project is called the Redaction Paintings. Its a set of canvases and each one has a print of Guantanamo Bay US documents on it. The names of the victims/torturers are bleeped out with black boxes. Some have the handprints of the prosecuted soldiers, but those too are censored. A special piece of the series has a paper from a group of soldiers, asking their commander (or whatever) permission for special interrogation techniques. I thought it was really interesting because each item on the list (e.g. Low Voltage Electrocution) was described with military-like formal terms. Why can’t you just say “I wanna punch this guy?” *stupid bureaucrats*
Speaking of awesome stuff, the snow I mentioned earlier continues to please! Chicago is covered with beautiful snow. But, unfortunately, this means I’m late for school. Oh well, a few tardies is worth it for a city blanketed with fluff. My brother and I built the most awesome snow fort (did I mention that before?) a couple days ago. Joey helped us build it. We also used his house’s porch stairs for a makeshift sledding hill. The hours (yes, hours) of backbreaking work was well worth it. And, since I mentioned Joey, I might as well show you this picture of his nephew, Noah. Cutest. Baby. Ever. Maybe.

And some ice…

Last night, we went to Rocky’s Tacos. Its just some little Mexican restaurant. But, like many others, they have one of those digital TouchTunes jukeboxes. Just for fun, I typed in “Wilco” to see if they maybe, just maybe, had some of my dad’s music. I was so so surprised when not just one song or one album, but a whole collection of Wilco music popped up. Of course, I updated my Facebook status saying, “Spencer Tweedy can’t believe Rocky’s Tacos has Wilco on their jukebox.” Score!

Lastly, I got my haircut! It hasn’t quite grown in yet, so I’ll just show you my hair–on the floor. Check it out.

I can’t believe I missed all the (snow) fun by just a few days. Photo of snow fort, please! And of new haircut, I’m sure it looks great. Finally, “Flex Friday” is the coolest thing, I wish Leah’s school had that.
P.S. How come I never got to go to Rocky’s Tacos?
I love Jenny Holzer! I gotta get to that exhibit.
One time I heard a Wilco song in Jewel while I was shopping for Eggos. It kind of freaked me out.
Thanks for the tip on Jenny Holzer. Her artwork looks very cool indeed.
I can’t believe that ice!
A few weeks ago we went to a local pizzeria and got to listen to the whole of Sky Blue Sky. It was a lovely surprise.
I was JUST in Chicago for 3 days..and the last time I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art it had a horrible exhibit..now I wish I would have made time to go!!!
Very exciting that your dad’s music is at Rocky’s Tacos.
I agree with your uncle, snow fort photos are a must.
I’ve heard A Shot in the Arm in Starbucks once…and one time while I was at work (Whole Foods) Impossible Germany came on!
Chipotle played Passenger Side a few days ago (they play some cool music there).
Also, I went to a pizza place and they played some tracks from SBS. It was pretty cool. :)
That’s awesome everyone! We’ve heard Wilco in Chipotle a couple of times. They were playing some pretty rare tracks, too.
