like a hermit crab or a mermaid booby

Oct 16, 2009

Yesterday was picture day at my school. This was the first year, I think, the photographer didn’t try to put my hair behind my ears and make me look like an elf. Hopefully it will turn out better than last year’s (smile so bad, had to retake on make-up day), or the year before (looked constipated).

MORE IMPORTANTLY, what. is. this.

…and why is it so cute and look like a fake clay sculpey thing? It’s actually a salamander from this Huffpost article about weird-looking animals. We were like “OMG WE NEED TO GET ONE!” but they’re endangered, soo, don’t know how that would work out.

This is really cool, too. I like how it looks like leaves and seaweed but it’s alive. And it’s a seahorse, which is already cool, cause it’s like “horse” but underwater so it’s a seahorse? Eh?

Where The Wild Things Are came out today. If it wasn’t common knowledge that it’s going to be sold out in basically every theater everywhere (and if we had the patience to wait in line), I might have seen it. So far I’ve heard good and bad reviews, the bad mostly saying it’s beautiful but not such a great “movie” (whatever that means) and the good being like “it is so moving you need to see it.” Sammy and I actually auditioned for Max’s part I think.. three years ago, and, er, obviously didn’t get it. (In our defense: we’re not actors and Sammy didn’t know how to read.. yeah.) I’m sure, though, that if one of us had gotten it ALL THE REVIEWS WOULD BE GOOD. ALL OF THEM.

P.S. I have a formspring now (nice thing where you can ask questions or say stuff – all the cool kids are doing it, it’s fun).

(Update: re formspring – it’s a little box where you can anonymously ask questions or say something and then if it’s decent, I guess, it gets answered here. It’s a concept I don’t entirely get but it seems pretty fun so I wanted to try it out!)

Title: Tracy Jordan from 30 Rock on him “losing touch with his roots.” One of the best TV characters ever, by the way.

HOLY SHIT THAT’S REAL?!?!?!?

And I already told you why I liked Wild Things.

And thank you for reminding me I missed picture day and makeups.

seconding Tavi – that looks like it was a creation and not a real thing. That is sincerely wild.

You guys really auditioned for that film? Wow! Pretty darn cool.

That does look weird!

It would have been so cool if you got the part. I want to see it even more after reading an interview where Spike Jonze says he wrote the entire script while listening to Arcade Fire’s “Funeral”. After seeing the trailer so many times, the movie and the song “Wake Up” are permanently joined in my mind.

I ended up not seeing Wild Things last night either (ended up returning the tickets, right before my sister called me to say “I changed my mind, I want to go!”) Let’s make a deal to go see it in theatres in our respective cities sometime within the next week…although I will be in NYC next weekend…hm.

Unfortunately those of us who live at the arse end of the world (but it is a nice arse) don’t get to see the movie until early December. I’m thinking it will be great but when I saw the trailer with the ‘Wake Up’ song, I instantly fell in love. I’m thinking it’s going to be one of those ‘I must get this on dvd’ movies even when you have only seen the preview.
I really love that little salamander. So cute. I want to make a soft toy based on it. It could make me millions because how could you resist getting one?!

The first pic you have there isn’t a real-life creature at all, but a character from the Pokemon anime series named Freakachu.

i think that thing is the cutest animal ever. besides the slow loris. the seaweed-horse thing is awesome too! but not as cute.

definitely see where the wild things are. it’s totally not the book, but the book was like, 5 pages, and you can’t make an accurate movie out of a 5-paged book. it’s really awesome and epic though.

Wild Things was really good…but REALLY sad. I’m guessing most younger kids won’t pick up on how sad, but as I was wiping tears with a very scratchy napkin, I glanced at my 6 year old and he had tears streaming down his face.

Dude. The animal in the second pic is called a Sea Dragon…coolest animal ever. I know this because I wrote a whole paper on them last year (the great thing about that sentence is that last year was my Sophomore year of college…best class/assignment ever?) Anyway look ‘em up they’re actually pretty cool, they only live off the Southern coast of Australia and they don’t have any natural predators since they’re so bomb at camouflage. They’re still pretty endangered though cause divers keep trying to take them home as pets :(

Anyway. Moral of the story is sea dragons are awesome. And I also can’t wait to see Where the Wild Things Are…

man, 30rock is so good. my saturday was thai food from Snow Spice, watching the 30rock season 3 dvd in its entirety, and learning to knit [almost finished a hat! a real live hat. that is useful. as a hat.]. kind of the best day ever.

i almost saw Where the Wild Things Are this weekend, but opted instead to avoid the hipsters of opening day and enjoy the toy story 3-d double feature instead. it was a really good decision.

Axolotls are popular amongst crafters. Pretty obvious why, I’d say. :)

A couple of cuties:

They also look a lot like juvenile tiger salamanders, which are not endangered. As a bonus, they morph into… tiger salamanders.

[...] but still amazing for a wee laddy. I know nothing about acting besides he did a way better job than Sammy or I could’ve (no offense, Sam, self) and that he’s good at throwing tantrums/biting his mother. P.S. did [...]
