live your own time, child-named-Woody-Guthrie, live your own time
Oct 13, 2009This weekend we went to Michigan, and guess who was there! Tavi!

IN ACTION (aka the only picture I found of us both this weekend).
It was really fun. We read F U Penguin and ate Pizza Hut (ew why is that capitalized) and played some tiddlywinks game. We also watched I’m Not There, which I liked a lot, but I need to see it again. There were a couple wtfffff moments, like when the little kid named Woody Guthrie gets swallowed by a whale? In a river? And there’s a giraffe? In the middle of nowhere? I think it’s a really good movie though, a piece of art. Cate Blanchett and Charlotte Gainsbourg are the shiitake mushrooms.
Anyway, here are the pictures from le canoe trip. I used a one buck generic disposable so the film ain’t too good, it seems. But I like ‘em (sorry Tom Joad dialect rubbing off on me).
kayaks.
It is seriously so beautiful there.
This highway bridge is a really depressing site when you’re on that river. It’s like ooh pretty moss and rocks then this concrete graffitied poop.
My friend found a caterpillar.
P.S. I saw a llama.
Title: Line from I’m Not There, when the little kid named Woody Guthrie stays with this family and the mom is like, “live your own time, child,” because he sings about boxcars. Aand it was funny for some reason.

I heard some girls talking about Tavi’s blog the other day…It surprised me. Don’t think they’d be interested in your blog though!
just got back from KY, where my Mom lives, and these pics remind me of some of the scenery there. It made me think about the loneliness topic of your previous post, and how familiar landscapes that connect you to your kin can be a friend even when those people are gone, but that’s something that is disappearing, it seems, at least in urban areas where everything is in a state of flux.
Michigan looks cool. But what is a boxcar? I’ve been listening to ‘Here comes your man’ by the Pixies alot lately and it goes ‘outside there’s a boxcar waiting…’ Is a boxcar like a go-cart? Excuse my ignorance! Found out last night that Pavement are coming to NZ for one show. Eeekkkk! Colour me excited.
the cars on a train – like the Hobos used to ride in the good ole days…speaking of which – Hobo is a nice word than “Bum” and more descriptive and iconic than the PC “Homeless”.
I really like your jackets in the first picture. Layers = Win.
Let the wild rumpus start… btw.
I LOVE YOUR FACE IN THE PICTURE WITH TAVI

I officially think you like Michigan more than Sufjan Stevens :-D
I don’t know what are you go to when you go there, but if you go anywhere near Battle Creek or Kalamazoo, you have to try this donut place:

The Battle Creek location is right off I-94.
Always enjoy seeing pics of you with your friends/Sam.
Thank you Brett! I felt a little silly for not knowing that term. But maybe it’s a NZ thing (that we don’t have them here). Cheers :)
You’re welcome Sarah…and Boxcar Willie welcomes you, too.
heyyyyy that’s me. in my pants.
AND GET THE LINE STRAIGHT. It’s “live your own time, child. SING ABOUT your own time.” Goddammit.
And I like the photos with the disposable, I should use some next time I want to be artsy fartsy
great flick..one you could watch a few times and catch something different each time,
those donuts look real sweet wes
I love that Jeff has become “Jeff (not spencer’s dad)”
you say it’s a “piece of art,” but that’s exactly what it’s trying so hard to be! so hard. i don’t know. it was alright–has its moments, mostly wtf ones. but don’t think you owe it to the thing to watch it again. go with your instinct, chil’.
your style is almost cooler than tavi’s! ;)
