monstuhs!
Jul 14, 2009I’m generally against apologizing on blogs (it can get a bit repetitive, no?), but I am sorry about a lack of posts lately. Camp and summer-stuff have sort of been in the way. It’s “that time of the blog” again, y’know, the one where I question direction and concept? Nothing that hasn’t happened before.. just thinking about post length and topic and, more importantly, mindset. I’ll fig’er it out.
In other news..
Sunburns suck! Majorly. You know what else sucks? Sleep deprivation. But, hey, ’tis the price of a crazy weekend in Michigan… when you.. don’t wear sunscreen or.. go to sleep? It’s not as bad as the time I had to take an oatmeal-bath, though – that was a bad sunburn. Or when I stayed up all night and ate donuts in the morning.. fun-to-not-so-fun timez.
And tech camp is over! I’m happy, and sad, but mostly happy. I made some pretty cool friends that, unless they/me drive hours, I won’t really see that often – if ever. But I’m really happy it’s over. I hate to say this, but, frankly, I didn’t learn anything. Well, anything that I wouldn’t learn on my own, anyway. So that was a bummer. At least I made these guys:
Say hello to Egg, Sunny, and Berry. I made them with Adobe Illustrator and guidelines from Spoon Graphics. I’m really happy with how they turned out. I especially like Berry (blue), I think – his fur’s the best.
Hi Spencer…hope you had a fun trip. I like your creations; I think I like Berry best, too. He’s neat and tidy looking. Maybe you could incorporate them into a a flash game, like “Monster Pong” or something? Your comments about sunburn make me wonder if it’s worse now that it was when I was your age. My Dad had a houseboat and on my weeks with him in the summer, we were usually up there and I got plenty of sunburns. But I wonder if changes in the environment have made getting a sunburn worse now than it was back then, like maybe you get *more* sun now?

Nice ones on the monsters. They remind me of designs by Von Glitschka, who does a LOT of work with Illustrator and has some really interesting \tribal\ designs: http://artbackwash.blogspot.com/
I don’t mean to be rude, but I really dislike the stuff that Von Glitschka does. I find it the most annoying cartoons/illustrations out there. My dad really likes ‘em though!
Ha! What drives me bonkers about Glitschka is his obvious hero-worship of the late Billy Mays. But his tribal stuff isn’t bad, I think, and the monstuhs here made me think of some of his character designs. Probably because of all the curves and the use of fairly intense/vibrant colors.
It’s “Sunny” for me. Then again I’m a Florida guy so go figure.
