Get Your “Uno” On (Uno In The Grass)
Jul 7, 2009Hiiii everybody. Excuse nonsensicalness (whoa that’s actually a word, pleasant surprise~~), please, I’ve be not-at-home from morning to pretty much now, so my mind is a bit.. fuzzled (now that’s not a real word). I was at “graphic arts camp,” then we went to see Ice Age, and finally Barnes & Noble. I got a book! Two books! One is all about space by this seemingly really cool writer named Neil deGrasse Tyson, who I hear is the only person to have been interviewed on the Colbert Report six times, and was the first guest Colbert ever had on. I was worried that it would be all stuff I didn’t understand (science words, I mean, like meteoric-galactic-space-gelatin-neuro-plasma-thing-blob), but the blurb on the back says Mr. Tyson is known for explaining “the mysteries of outer space with clarity and enthusiasm.”
.. yeah.
The other book I got is Travels with Charley in Search of America, by John Steinbeck. I didn’t get to look through it much, but my dad thinks I’ll love – or at least like – it. I think I will, too. It’s a Penguin Classic (just like Winesburg, Ohio, which I have and still need to read)! Blurb sounds all soul-searchy but oddly uncorny (yesyesyes), plus it involves “the rhythms of nature,” so it shouuld be awesome-philosophical-sauce. “Me likey.”
So yeah, graphic arts camp! Whoo! Not really, actually. I mean, it’s okay – there’s just a lot to say that I don’t necessarily, uh, want on the interweb, where certain people might see, and it’d just be generally awkward or something like that. Ooon the plus side, I’m making some pretty cool stuffs that I’ll probably get to show you in the near future! It involves furry monsters and lots of cool retro-ish Illustrator design. Yeah!

My friend Eliza takes some pretty cool photos. This is one of my favorites. Speeaking of photography, I got a Holga as a late Bar-Mitzvah present (thanks Jennifer!). So far, it’s awesome. It even comes with a built-in colorflash thingy with white, red, yellow, and blue flashes. It, being a Lomo camera, also, reminds me of the Diana+ but it’s more like it’s older brother or something. Or friend. Or something. It feels really sturdy and a bit more real-camera-ish than the Diana+, however. But they’re both super cool. I like saying that a lot now, “super cool?” Anyway, you’re probably thiiinking “ooh, he got another camera. psshh.” Well that’s what I think you might be thinking. So please stop thinking that! Aah I’m not an ungrateful turd! Stop!

I also really like these paintings by Jennifer Sanchez.

finally..
heheh.
Okeleydokeley, I think that was a decent post considering the conditionz. I think I’ll do some more recapping on the tour/L.A. trip, later (like this weekend), if’cha don’t mind. I need sleep. ttfn! (that’s only cool because that guy said it!)

spencer, can whole heartedly say that travels with charley, like grapes of wrath (steinbeck’s classic and the utmost american novel) and on the road, is so epically american in its subtlties that you will enjoy it. essential reading for all americans. and i do mean all. criminally overlooked in the steinbeck catalog.

My favorite quote from the Sulimay’s video: “oh that’s my kinda music……the kind you get down and dirty with…i like that. yeah, yeah.”
Too funny!
Travels with Charley is a great, great book, and much more personal than Steinbeck’s other works- just avoid The Pearl at all costs.
Holgas are awesome too, they’re so much fun to work with :)
Your blog is so cool! You’ve got some pretty epic thoughts stored up haha

That video is so funny. I will have to watch some more.
Graphic Arts Camp sounds pretty cool. I’m loving those paintings by Jannifer Sanchez. Thanks for that!
graphic design camp? NICE! Why didn’t they have that kind of thing when I was a kid?
Another aspect of lucky kid!
Anyway the woodshopfilms video is brilliant!
I so think this is a good idea.
Why not?
The pic is also awesome and art.
Keep it up kid.
This will make my summer more exciting.
I love Breakfast at Sulimay’s. :) They did one with Noble Beast, too.
i’ve read travels with charley 4 times now (over the past decade or so). you won’t be able to put it down… its a real work of art.
have you read cannery row yet?
I’m not a big Steinbeck fan, but I LOVED Travels with Charley. Charley is a standard poodle, and I know most people think poodles are wimpy girly-dogs, but standard poodles are really cool dogs with strong personalities and are very very smart. Charley was no exception. The book is well written and engaging, and if you’re a fan of Steinbeck you’ll probable enjoy it a lot.
Have you ever read any Farley Mowat? He’s a Canadian writer and his books are hilariously funny and real treasure troves of information about Canada as well as his fairly crazy family. He wrote Never Cry Wolf, which was made into a movie, as well as my personal favorites The Dog that Wouldn’t Be and The Boat that Wouldn’t Float. They’re the perfect light summer reading and will have you laughing out loud within minutes of opening the first page.
There are alot of Uno virgins out there. (inside joke xD)
