Songs of the Week – Hypnotized

May 4, 2009

A collage I made awhile back..

Bob Dylan -

Yes, it’s Bob Dylan. If you don’t know who he is you…. might need to die in a hole (or is that a bit harsh)? His Last.fm description does not do him justice..

P.S. they played a Bob Dylan song at my BAR MITZVAH PARTY (which you’ll be hearing about soon) and Tavi – of course – knew every single word and sung every one of them.

“Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota) is an American musician, poet and artist, whose place in American and European culture in the 1960s through to the present is unique.” - Last.fm on Bob Dylan

Radiohead -

Yay! Radiohead is suh-weet.

“Radiohead are an English alternative rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The band is composed of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, beats), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboard, other instruments), Ed O’Brien (guitar, backing vocals), Colin Greenwood (bass guitar) and Phil Selway (drums, percussion).” - Last.fm on Radiohead

Neutral Milk Hotel -

Despite being a lesser-known indie project, their album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is one of the best sounding (song and quality-wise) albums of all time. It is a fact, my friends.

Neutral Milk Hotel centered on chief lyricist and songwriter, Jeff Mangum, who on the band’s two full-length albums, played with a number of other musicians, notably Jeremy Barnes (drums), Scott Spillane (horns), Julian Koster (saw/banjo/accordion/bass guitar) and producer-instrumentalist Robert Schneider. Neutral Milk Hotel were one of the original members of the Elephant Six Collective, based in Athens, Georgia. They have been on an indefinite hiatus since 1998.” – Last.fm on Neutral Milk Hotel

Bob Marley & The Wailers -

Mmm.. Reggae. My friends and I like to play reggae when we’re “jamming,” as they say. It’s really fun to play on drums, even though it’s got a pretty basic, essential groove.

“Bob Marley & the Wailers was a reggae band created in 1973 by Bob Marley, after Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailerleft the precursor band, The Wailers.” – Last.fm on Bob Marley & The Wailers

Blitzen Trapper -

An indie band, on Sub Pop, very similar to Fleet Foxes. My favorite song of their album, Furr, is probably Furr. I had a lot to say about these guys but I forgot now..

“Blitzen Trapper are a sextet based out of Portland, Oregon, United States. In various combinations and guises, the group had already played a long time together before the “crystalization event” in July 2000 on the slopes of the famous volcano Mt Hood. Since then they have delighted audiences of all ages and socioeconomic groups, mostly playing close to home and for many years distributing recordings like itinerant madmen, for free.” - Last.fm on Blitzen Trapper

The name of this embed playlist color scheme on Grooveshark is “Hipster Sneakers”… reminds me of LATFH.

None of there songs go anywhere.

And they’re not lesser known. Everyone knows who they are.

BAD.

They stink of falsity.

Neutral Milk Hotel is something you get over once you turn 16. Therefore I am not knocking Spencer’s post as “bad.” If I had a blog when I was 13, I’d be mortified by the things I’d write. Granted if I had a blog now, the me 5 years from now would be embarassed as well.

Also, Spencer, I think you should consider a mixtape exchange in the works for this blog over for the summer, it would be fun!!!

And to Bob Marley I give you: http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2009/04/22/125-bob-marley/

Whatever, Spencer, Don’t listen. I know of an English professor at Trinity University who is writing an article on Neutral Milk Hotel. He’s a grown 30 something year old man. My friends and I had never heard of them and we’re in our late twenties, your posts are actually informative for us old people. By the way have you heard Grizzly Bear?

My dad is a huge reggae fan, so when I first started to play the drums he taught me the basic groove. :)
Do you listen to any ska?

you are torturing with lack of Bar Mitzvah news – so much lead up and now we’re left hanging. Some old people (like me) think Neutral Milk Hotel are amazing, even if their name is silly.

HELL YEAH I KNEW ALL THE WORDS. Unlike that hoedown throwdown thing. How do you “polka dot it?” What is “it” anyway? I’d much rather draw circles with the ragman. Personally.

Aw, I love NMH.

And YEAH REALLY, where is the Bar Mitzvah post? Failblog: SPENCER TWEEDY.

KIDS, Bob Dylan is not very good! SERIOUSLY, get over him! Leonard Cohen is much better, his first few albums anyway. Dylan is way overated, boring, his voice is miserable. There’s much better out there!

If I could recommend some stuff, Spencer:

Cocteau Twins – ambient/goth/electronic group from the 80s/90s

Bobby Bare Jr. – specifically “From the End of Your Leash” – country-rock – Nashville based – singer/songwriter stuff

Pigface – late 80s/early 90s industrial music by Martin Atkins with real special guests over the course of their history (Trent Reznor, Flea, Steve Albini, Black Francis and many, many more). Your patriarch may have some of their albums. Real hard stuff at times, but really rewarding. start with “Gub”.

Now I want to listen to some Pigface…

Hey man, thanks so much for including a Grooveshark widget on your blog. We appreciate it.

@henry mosher give Neutral Milk Hotel another chance. It took about 10 listens of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea for it to really resonate with me.
