Hi-Ho-Silver Ride

Apr 15, 2009

School was better today, people. Thanks for all of your encouraging comments. I’m sure high school will be better than junior high (according to what I hear). And girls will get better, too, I guess. Right now they’re just so.. dramatic. “OH EM GEE. SO LIKE HE’S DATING HER? I LIKE THOUGHT THEY WERE THROUGH. OH EM GEE. LIKE OH. EM. GEE.” But like I said, there IS the Cool List. And if you’re reading this, you’re on it fo’ sho’, cuz only cool people read blogs like this.

Speaking of your guyz’s comments, one or two of you mentioned New Zealand. I went there back in December, and I loved it. In fact, I was just watching some videos we took while we were there. It’s such a beautiful place. Too bad it’s 18 hours away. The kids there always made fun of/loved our accents. Their favorites words for us to say were “grass” “fart” and “skirt.” Every time we said any of those they would instantly start cracking up. We have a video of it, but I can’t find it right now.

And you know what else I’ve been watching? The cutest videos of little kids singing Wilco songs. Well, not just Wilco songs. I also saw one of two kids singing Stereo by Pavement… I love Pavement.

I couldn’t find the Wilco ones! Darnniitt.

And you know what else else I’ve been watching? Spongebob and Flapjack, otherwise known as the only good cartoons ever made! It’s actually kind of ironic that I like them. They’re Sammy’s favorites, too, which means they’re on ALL THE TIME, and they can get pretty annoying. But there’s something about the.. about the.. about the awesomeness of Flapjack (and occasionally Spongebob) that is really fun to watch.

Anyways.. I had a school band concert yesterday. I played in two bands, classical and jazz. The jazz band is muuuch more enjoyable than the other one, mainly because I get way better parts in the latter. And, Dan, the conductor, is prejudiced against drummers in the concert band. But in jazz band he’s awesome. Weird, huh? We don’t even play much jazz in jazz band. It’s mostly Latin and funk tunes, which is great because there are lots of drum solos and rhythm section breaks and things like that ;).

When I got home from the concert, I wrote a little acknowledgment paragraph thingy for a Bar Mitzvah pamphlet, which is in LESS THAN THREE WEEKS, by the way. I’m freaking out. But not really. I have everything down, except I still need to write my speech, learn my haftorah… Okay maybe I should be freaking out! But for the most part, everything is ready freddy. Today I even bought my suit for the big day! We spent probably over two hours in the store, but most of that time was spent listening to Sam whine and complain (hence this Tweet) non. stop. I’m really happy about my suit and I can’t wait to wear it!

As a result of suit shopping at Old Orchard, we got home at a million o’clock.. so I better get going. Adios!

Ha ha that’s funny. I miss Pavement! Wish they were still around. I remember seeing them way back in 1992 ( I think! I know, I’m showing my age…) and their first drummer stood at the door at the end of the gig shaking hands with the audience.
Nice work on the Barmitzvah suit. I think when it comes to be Sammy’s turn to look for a Barmitzvah suit, then you should remind him of his complaining. ha ha

Our school band are doing well at the moment. Although our search to find a good drummer hasn’t succeeded yet. Luckily we have had different mentors/teachers including http://www.myspace.com/graysongilmour who toured with Liam Finn in his AWEESOMMEE band So So Modern…good times.
And Spongebob Squarepants is awesome, the new episodes are so random. I love TV shows that dont make sense!

Now you’ve got me thinking about WHY (most) girls are such idiots around 13-14. It’s embarrassing. And so unnecessary. I know there’s been a ton written on it, the Mean Girls thing, Carol Gilligan, etc, but I think the over-riding thing is an intellectual self-awareness that happens around that time which – combined with all the nice hormones – results in total chaos in their thinking about who they want to be and how to present themselves to the world. They end up choosing the path of least resistance and being all simpering and/or overly dramatic, trying to please other people instead of just being themselves (the problem is, they actually are trying to figure out who they are…). Girls who retain a continuous grip on their identity come off (to me) as much more bearable, but I don’t know why some girls hold steady and others don’t.
Enough rambling, now I’ll listen to Pavement and get some work done.

My(the) high school band just got back from performing at Carnegie Hall! I thought that that was pretty cool. I’m a percussionist in the middle school band, and right now I’m working on a pretty easy bass drum part and a timpani part. … Our conductor is very, uhm, insulting. He’ll call us dumb asses, jack-asses, retards, short-bus worthy or tell us to get our heads out of our butts (there are many variations on that one). It’s kinda funny when he’s calling someone else that, but a bit demeaning when he tells it to you. =)
